(7/20/05) Walking down the city streets of Shanghai, visitors from the west may be surprised to see a river of umbrellas. This is because the sun is beaming in the sky; not a cloud is in sight. So why the umbrellas? Unlike Western culture, where artificial sun tanning is widely accepted and even revered, the Chinese people view pristine, white skin as beauty, not dark, tanned skin. It isn’t the health benefit of protecting one’s skin from the sun that is appealing, but the aesthetic appeal. White skin is simply considered more beautiful.

Hong Kong Disneyland, set to open on September 12, 2005, will be distributing tickets and hotel arrangements to mainland China via Ctrip, Forbes reports. It is the first Disney theme park to be opened in China, and hopes to draw Chinese tourists to its gates with the allure of "Disney Magic" along with upscale, victorian-style hotels.
The distribution of tickets to mainland China is a major watermark in the park's success, since over one half of the park's revenue is expected to be generated by business from mainland china.
