(01/06/06) BEIJING - China is ready for Third-generation cell phones after a long delay by Beijing in order to develop their own standards. The government now wants to have 3G services available before the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
Third-generation wireless services move data faster to cell phones and other mobile devices, allowing for web surfing, music downloads, video downloads, and more. "Compared with Europe and the United States, we are relatively late in creating our standard and our investment is far smaller," said an unnamed official.

(09/16/05) Today China will start the first day of its 10th international ozone protection conference in Shenzhen. It is a fitting way to mark the UN's International Ozone Day, which governments all over the world will join in to celebrate.
Representatives from over 40 countries and the mayors of 41 Chinese cities will take part in this two day event along with officials from the State Environmental Protection Administration and the UN Environment Program.
The conference will focus on ozone protection in cities and towns and the reduction of products using ODS or Ozone Depleting Substances. The conference's focus comes about after a recent survey in Shenzhen revealed that 90 percent of Shenzhen citizens knew about the ozone layer but did not know how to protect it.

(7/20/05) Four people have been killed and over one million evacuated from their homes because of the forces of Typhoon Haitang. The southeastern coastal provinces of Fujian and Zhejiang were hit the hardest, with reports of up to 126 kmh winds in the Fujian city of Lianjiang.
The devastating storm has forced airports to shut down and flooded streets. Over 300 people are still trapped in the Zhejiang province.

A new anti-aids treatment, developed by Tianjin-based FusoGen Pharmaceuticals, is being tested in China. The new treatment utilizes a special protein to block the entry "gate," thus preventing the AIDS virus from infecting human cells.
The primary differance between this treatment and others, scientists say, is that this treats the human cell rather than attack the virus itself, so the viruses cannot simply adapt to overcome the treatment.
