China Continues Efforts To Control Population

(9/16/05) China's population and family planning minister, Zhang Weiqing, has stated that the NPFPC wants to keep China's population below 1.37 billion by 2010 by using devising a plan that features improved organization and management.

Last year, China implemented a pilot project in its rural areas that rewarded 310,000 farmers in 10 cities 200 million yuan for having only one son or two daughters.

Women's Rights Forum in China

(7/20/05) Last Thursday, members of the NGO China Women News met at a forum they created to discuss an amendment to the Law on the Protection of the Rights and Interests of Women. Under the supervision of an expert panel, revisions have been in the works since late 2003. The amendment was brought to the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress late last month.

Sexual harassment will finally be recognized as a crime in China according to the amendment. Accurately defining the term was a difficult process. Makers of the amendment hope to cut down on the overwhelming 79 percent of women who claim to be victims of harassment in the office.

Tibet to celebrate 40th anniversary of TAR establishment

Hundreds of workers are repairing the front wall of the splendid Potala Palace on July 11, 2005. At present, many places are undergoing repairing and maintenance works to welcome the 40th anniversary of the establishment of Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR) with a brand-new look.
